LINE-

 Line Definition-

The leading lines photography definition is a simple composition line concept. The viewer's eyes are naturally drawn along vertical lines, parallel lines, diagonal lines and even strong horizontal lines. Some of the main subjects in images, such as these, are paths, rails, buildings and streets.

Psychological meaning for Lines-

•Horizontal lines imply tranquillity, peace and harmony

•Vertical lines imply power and strength.

•Diagonal lines imply movement, action and change.

•Curved lines or S shaped lines imply quiet, calm and sensual feelings.

•Lines that converge imply depth, scale and distance - a fence or roadway converges into the distance provides the illusion that a flat two-dimensional image has three-dimensional depth

Peter Keetman-

Peter Keetman was born in 1916 in Munich and died in 2005 but in his life he left a legacy of photography which started in 1935 and passed a masters craftsman diploma in 1948. In 1949 Keetman joined a group of photographers that revolutionised photography in the 50's and 60's.  He was a central figure in German post-war modern photography, and the exhibition World through a Creative Camera – The Life’s Work of a Photographer is the largest survey of his work to date.

From the artist about line- With this image, I took it a tray above the previous piece of work and once again it creates great depth. The addition of shadows within the image makes great contrast to the shiny nature of the metal. The line forms within the photo are all very straight which I believe makes the image very visually appealing as the different lines draw our eyes into several different places.

In these photos I see different variations of lines being demonstrated throughout multiple items, some of them are to do with cars, a window with raindrops and the others are hidden within items. It makes me realise that lines are powerful and we use them a lot in our everyday lives because we are constantly surrounded by them everywhere we go. I think the photographer is trying to communicate the message of together we are strong because one line cant hold up something it needs multiple to hold anything up. The images communicates this message from the 3rd and 4th image because they relate to that aspect of the message the photographer is trying to get across. The emotions represented are calm, relaxed and mind easing. I would like to know where the first two items come from as its hard to justify what they could be. I like the third, fourth and fifth image as it shows a controversy towards the lines people think about straight away for example, zebra crossing and opens their minds to the different possibilities. I dislike that on the second image the angle is tilted so you can’t really make out where the lines cross and the reflection doesn’t really show the aspect of line either. I think the fourth image has been achieved by going to a bridge over a road at night and taking an image without flash so you can really shine the light through the darkness, which gives of the message of “light in the darkness” because at that point that was the only source of light. I would take the idea of the close-ups and being more adventurous in the way I go about line.

The first photo looks like the photographer has taken the image from either a park or a work place to get the specific curves, which the ones in front are darker compared to the ones in the back which are more lighter which could be the flashes fault. The second photo shows a zoom in to what looks like a chain kind of effect as it reminds me of gears when they pass each other, there has been shadows reflected onto the items. The third image looks like it has been taken from either a building or a bench because it represents that sort of form/shape, and the criss cross pattern makes it look more stable, more powerful to be together. The fourth image has been taken at night to represent the little light in darkness it shows a different perspective of how you can interpret line, even though you can’t really see the cars, it’s the first image that comes to mind when you see this photo. The fifth photo is the most different out of all of them because its not an actual object its natural, I feel like I’ve represented his style of photos in my own work with my own little spin on them.

Contact Sheet-

(AO1.  You must ensure that several of the visual ideas/inspirations within the image bank are pursued. )

In this contact sheet I wanted to take photos that represented the formal element of line. I went into my local town centre and walked round the shops and outside to try and find items that signified with line, I mostly looked at the exterior and the ceilings/flooring because I felt that those had more lines represented throughout them. I also wanted to take photos where line is quite hidden to give some differentiation.

Five Best Photos-

I chose these photos as my best five as I feel they each represented line quite well but in there own way however it also shows the different variations of line that you can find locally. The first two are objects that I found in a store or in a park however the other ones are natural so you can find them anywhere you go. I also chose to turn them black and white because I feel the lines stand out more.

5 Photos That Need Improvement-

I think I could improve the first photo by changing the levels of contrast and saturation so you can focus on the parts where the lines are more strong. I think I could improve the second photo by taking a photo from a different angle because where its slanted as you can’t tell where the lines start or end. I think I could improve the third photo by focusing on the fence instead of the leaves in the background because it takes away from the effect of the fence. I think I could improve the fourth photo by taking it at a straighter angle and to get more close to the fence so you can blur the green behind it. I think I could improve the fifth photo by cropping out the top corner and adjusting the contrast/saturation to make the parts in between the black parts stand out to show tone and definition.

Edits-

I edited my photos on Photoshop to create a more creative side to the theme of line. Most of these photos were taken in either a store or outside to show the different types of line you can find all around you. I like how the reflection is so strong on the first image to show throughout the other walls surrounding.

I like to blur out the background of the photos so the main focus is on the lines.

I dislike the second image as even though it represents line I don’t think it does it as well as the other pictures. I would improve some of the angles of how I took my photos to show lines from the start to end to show the purpose/message behind of them. If I were to do it again I would go outside and take photos of line because the majority of it is inside and it could show a significant difference between the format of lines.

Firstly I dragged the before image into Photoshop to make the lines stand out. I went onto adjustments and clicked on brightness/contrast this is where I changed the settings from 0,0 to brightness 8, contrast 18, which brightened up the background, then I went back onto adjustments but to black and white this time, this is where I proceeded to moving every colour sideways to the point where I wanted the background to be darker and the sign to be lighter, following this I went back to brightness/contrast to change it from 0,0 to brightness 3, contrast 43 this is where I enhanced what I did at the black and white stage to make it more eye catching for the people viewing the photo, as you can see quite a difference between not enhancing and enhancing.

Final Photos-

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

This is one of my final photos because I feel like it represented line quite well but it also reflects onto the mirrored surface surrounding it creating more lines available to see to show definition of every detail. I feel like my editing showed off the tone of the image as on the bar I enhanced the kind of rustic look which actually created another line onto it. I like how I took it from this angle because it shows more. This represents the photographer Peter Keetman because of the curves of line and the colours. The second photo is another final photo due to the fact that many factors around it represent line and not just the sign.
