Form Definition-

Form is a three dimensional shape, such as a cube, sphere or cone.

Sculpture and 3D design are about creating forms.

In 2D artworks, tone and perspective can be used to create an illusion of form.

Shape is very two dimensional, while form adds a third dimension because of the volume of an object. The eye is immediately drawn to form in an image and the art of creating this form is achieved by showing the contours of a subject—the human body as in a sumo wrestler, or the bold contours of round rocks on the seashore.

Good side lighting in early morning or late afternoon brings out the contoured form through shadow. Direct sunlight from above gives a very flat appearance to an image but when clouds pass over the sun form immediately rises and you have a perfect subject

Surrealism-

A movement in art and literature that flourished in the early twentieth century. Surrealism aimed at expressing imaginative dreams and visions free from conscious rational control. Salvador Dali was an influential surrealist painter; Jean Cocteau was a master of surrealist film.

La Trahison des images (Ceci n'est pas une pipe) (The Treachery of images [This is not a pipe]) is one of Rene Magritte's Surrealist masterpieces and an icon of modern art. Heavily influenced by Freudian psychology, Surrealism represented a reaction against the "Rationalism" that some believed led Europe into the horrors of World War I. It attempted to join the realm of dreams and fantasy to the everyday world. Magritte's word-image paintings are treatises on the impossibility of reconciling words, images, and objects. La Trahison des images challenges the linguistic convention of identifying an image of something as the thing itself. At first, Magritte's point appears simplistic, almost to the point of provocation: A painting of a pipe is not the pipe itself. In fact, this work is highly paradoxical. Its realistic style and caption format recall advertising, a field in which Magritte had worked.

Edward Weston-

Edward Henry Weston (March 24, 1886 – January 1, 1958) was a 20th-century American photographer. He has been called "one of the most innovative and influential American photographers..." and "one of the masters of 20th century photography." Over the course of his 40-year career Weston photographed an increasingly expansive set of subjects, including landscapes, still lives, nudes, portraits, genre scenes and even whimsical parodies. It is said that he developed a "quintessentially American, and specially Californian, approach to modern photography" because of his focus on the people and places of the American West. In 1937 Weston was the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship, and over the next two years he produced nearly 1,400 negatives using his 8 × 10 view camera. Some of his most famous photographs were taken of the trees and rocks at Point Lobos, California, near where he lived for many years.

The images makes me feel quite indifferent as I don't really to know what to feel other than relaxed, in the first image i think it's either a shell of something or kind of have to do with a nature as they are related to each other with the form being it having different curves in it. The second image is of some leaves included within in a plant where each part has a different tone to make it stand out from the other and to just add some brightness and darkness to the picture. On the third image I think its either the leaves on top of a pineapple or a plant, I like how he used the shadows to give them a bit of depth and contrast so they don't all look the same meaning you can see the detail in each one of them with parts standing out more than others. On the fourth image it looks like either a skull or a log, meaning that the light they have used has created definition in the shape and made the bit inside darker and the exterior lighter to show a contrast between them both, usually the background is darker than the main object so this one is different than the others.

My intentions for this shoot was to take photos in response to the artist/photographer Edward Weston, in which I took photos of objects like flowers, leaves etc with a black background so when I take the photo with the studio lights it focuses on the objects and creates the balance of light needed to contrast the other items. In edits I intend to change them into black and white to really reflect the artists work and I'm also going to adjust the curve and exposure to get back the highlights which were taken away when I first changed it to black and white. I feel that each photo is quite unique towards each other . With some lighting being dimmer than other we are focusing more on the hard light in this case rather than soft light.

5 Best Photos-

AO3Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

My idea for recording form was to photograph in the studio with hard lighting and lay some items on a table to create a kind of scene that the artist used to do his photos, That's why I was inspired to do this because of Edward Weston who created a series of images like that.

I chose these photos as my best five because I felt they represented Edward Weston's work quite well from being unedited, so I think when they are edited you will see some resemblance in the style, in editing i'm going to lighten up the main prospect of the photo and keep the background dark to create a contrast and enhancing the detail in the flower/object which with different aspects will bounce off each other and work well. I want to keep every aspect of the photo in it even when its black and white, i also feel the raindrops on the leaves and flowers will stand out as the colours will make it eye catching because they will turn white/glowy which on a dark background really pops.

5 Photos that need improvement-

I chose these as my photos that need improvement because even though they are not the worse photos with a bit of editing they could fit in with the others but this is based on the raw photos, there is good focus however the lighting is a bit off on some of them. I like all these photos very much, but i had to base my options on what would look good in editing as i have to turn them black and white and then add a few features to cast shadows and brighten areas up.

Edits Of Edward Weston-

I edited my photos like this to represent the work of Edward Weston, he used a variety of objects to create different types of form, I used an item that he didn't but then I added some aspects of his work like the flower to show more of an approach to nature, I'm going to use the 1st and 2nd photo as some of my final images because I like how i added some brightness to where the water was so it relates to the Zone System where it has variations of different tones. On the first image i wanted to create a bit of contrast with the shadows. On the second image I wanted to focus mostly on the flower. On the third image I wanted to have different variations of black to grey to represent each item individually. On the fourth image I wanted to make the areas that kind of faded stand out.

Firstly I changed the photo to black and white which I then moved the colours along to make the petals of the flower lighter and some of the details in the flower darker. Then I changed the brightness/contrast just to add towards the areas that I already made lighter and the others darker leading to why it stands out so much.

Final Photo's-

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

I believe that I have produced a strong series of images inspired by my research of form  and the images of Edward Weston. The final images produced were refined by developing the photos from there original form to black and white with added shadows and exposure.
